Protests spreading in US

The killing of a woman by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis has sparked protests in several cities across the United States.  Thousands took to the frigid streets of Minneapolis, New York and other major American cities, holding signs that called on ICE agents to leave their city as they held a vigil to honor the 37-year-old victim. Demonstrators also slammed President Trump’s nationwide crackdown on migrants. Some of the protesters near the scene were met by heavily armed federal agents wearing gas masks. Footage shared online has captured the moment when a dark-colored SUV attempts to speed away as an ICE officer starts shooting before the vehicle comes to a stop at the roadside.

The Spanish prime minister has once again spoken out about global tensions, this time reaffirming his support for Venezuela, whose future must be decided by its own people. Pedro Sanchez had earlier cautioned that Washington’s forcible seizure of President Nicolas Maduro risks pushing the world into a dangerous new era. Sanchez stressed that Spain will not remain silent in the face of violations of international law. The Spanish prime minister also condemned US threats against Greenland, stressing that his country would support the integrity of its European allies.

Iran FM visits Lebanon

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says his trip to Lebanon focuses on high-level consultations over Israeli threats and expanding bilateral political and economic ties. Araghchi says Israel has carried out acts of aggression against seven countries over the past two years, with parts of Lebanon still under Israeli occupation in violation of ceasefire commitments. He reaffirmed Iran’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Iranian minister has met with the Lebanese economy minister to discuss the expansion of commercial cooperation. Araghchi says bilateral trade volume surpassed 110 million dollars last year, reflecting notable growth and strong potential. Araghchi also held talks with Sheikh Ali al-Khatib, vice chairman of Lebanon’s Supreme Islamic Shia Council. He is scheduled to meet with Lebanon’s president, parliament speaker, and prime minister on Friday.
