British Metropolitan (Met) Police have launched an investigation into alleged illegal donations to Nigel Farage's Reform UK party amid a widening campaign-finance scandal that prompted the lawmaker to abruptly resign his seat in parliament earlier this week.

Media quoted a Met spokesperson confirming on Friday that Reform UK is being investigated over millions of pounds received from "impermissible" donors.

"Detectives from the Met's Special Enquiry Team are investigating alleged offenses under Section 61 of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000," the Met spokesperson said, adding that two people had been interviewed so far; however, "No arrests have been made."

In the meantime, Farage resigned as Clacton MP on Tuesday to trigger a by-election to seek a new vote of confidence from his constituency after the donations scandal broke out.

The far-right lawmaker, who has been likened to Republican US President Donald Trump by the media, said he would “fight to win” in the by-election.

He said that the reason for his resignation after the donations scandal broke out is so he can run again now, and allow the people of Clacton to "be the judges of his actions.”

If he is re-elected to parliament, the far-right anti-immigration politician said, he would "continue the political revolution that Reform has started.”

Farage, a vocal former Brexit campaigner, has described the donations to his party as a reward for his lifetime efforts.

He called donations an “unconditional gift” that he could spend on “Ferraris or the horses”.

Farage has been Leader of Reform UK since 2024. He was a member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England from 1999 until the UK withdrew from the European Union (EU) in 2020, and as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Clacton from 2024 to 2026.

Meanwhile, the country’s main political parties have condemned Farage.

Farage's resignation to get re-elected in a by-election has been described as a political stunt to evade punishment.

The by-election is scheduled for mid-August.
