Iraqi PM affirms support for diplomacy, regional stability in meeting with Iran's FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi (R) meet in Baghdad on June 28, 2026.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi says Baghdad strongly supports dialogue and diplomacy to end wars and establish stability in the region.

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Baghdad on Sunday, Zaidi said Iraq prioritizes ending wars and establishing stability through diplomatic means.

Iraq supports prioritizing an end to wars and adopting dialogue to establish stability in the region, he added.

The Iranian foreign minister and Iraqi prime minister discussed the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States that brought an end to the war between the two countries, as well as regional and international efforts to ensure security, stability, and respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Araghchi, for his part, once again affirmed Iran's steadfast support for Iraq and emphasized the importance of continued coordination to enhance bilateral relations and cooperation in various fields.

He also held a meeting with Iraqi President Nizar Amedi.

The top Iranian diplomat arrived in Baghdad earlier in the day on an official visit to hold talks with senior Iraqi officials on bilateral relations and regional developments.

According to Iraqi media reports, discussions are expected to cover the Iran-US MoU, Iraq’s debt payments to Iran, border security, and measures to prevent anti-Iran groups from operating on Iraqi territory.

Tehran and Washington signed the MoU on June 17 following a series of mediated negotiations, which calls for an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations and continued diplomatic engagement between the two sides.

Araghchi and his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, attended a joint press conference following their meeting.
