Pakistan names a Karachi street after Imam Khamenei, coinciding with Quds Day

Pakistani Muslims take part in a protest against the assassination of Imam Seyyed Ali Khamenei in Islamabad, Pakistan, on March 6.

The provincial government of Sindh in Pakistan has announced the naming of a street in Karachi after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Seyyed Ali Khamenei, coinciding with International Quds Day, according to local officials.

Sindh Minister for Local Councils Syed Nasir Hussain Shah announced in a video message that the provincial government has declared a public holiday on the occasion of International Quds Day, which falls on the last Friday of Ramadan.

"The Sindh government has decided to name one of the streets in Karachi after Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei," Shah was quoted as saying.

He called upon all Muslim organizations and community groups to organize their Quds Day marches according to traditional routes and established procedures.

International Quds Day, initiated by Imam Khomeini in 1979, is observed annually on the last Friday of Ramadan as a day of solidarity with the Palestinian people and opposition to Israeli occupation and genocide.

The day is marked by rallies and events in countries across the Muslim world and beyond.

The street naming decision represents a significant show of solidarity with the Iranian nation amid the ongoing Israeli-American war of aggression, which entered its 12th day on Wednesday.

More than 1,300 people have been martyred in this aggression, including Imam Khamenei and some top-ranking military commanders.

The Sindh government's announcement underscores the deep historical, cultural and religious ties between Pakistan and Iran and the wide following for Imam Khamenei in the Muslim-majority country.

Some of the largest pro-Iran processions in the region have been held in Pakistan in recent days since the Israeli-American coalition launched its unprovoked aggression.

On Tuesday, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on his election as Iran's new Leader, expressing confidence in his abilities to successfully guide the Islamic Republic towards further progress.

"I congratulate His Eminence Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on his assumption of the responsibilities of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran," Shehbaz Sharif wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.

"I also reiterate deepest condolences and prayers on behalf of the people of Pakistan on the martyrdom of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other family members."
