Iran freestylers seize top spot at U20 World Wrestling Championships

Iranian freestyle wrestlers have been crowned the Under 20 World Championships’ ultimate winners with an impressive array of medals.

The latest edition of the contest was held in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia from Monday to Wednesday.

The Iranian grapplers wrested three gold medals, one silver medal, and four bronzes.

The United States came second in the competition trailed by India.

The assortment of medals translated into 159 points for Team Iran.

The event’s Iranian gold medalists were Sobhan Yari, Amir-Hossein Firouzpour, and Amir-Reza Ma’soumi, who wrestled for the country in the respective weight categories of 79, 92, and 120 kilogram.

Armin Habibzadeh grabbed the silver in the 61kg class, while Ahmad Mohammadnezhad, Hossein Mohammad-Aqayi, Aref Ranjbari, and Amir-Ali Azar-Pira claimed the bronze for the 57, 70, 86, and 97kg classes.

Iranian wrestlers had come first in the last year’s edition of the championships, which was held in Russia, too.

President Ebrahim Raeisi congratulated the national team on the occasion of the victory in a statement, through which he hailed the triumph as “another glorious display of the Iranian nation’s capabilities and talents.”
