Visas for Iran’s national football team, coaching staff, and support personnel to travel to Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been issued, Iran’s ambassador to Turkey has announced.
Ambassador Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh said on Wednesday that the visas were issued and delivered to members of the national team within 48 hours.
Mexico will serve as the base camp for the Iranian delegation during the tournament.
According to Habibollahzadeh, Mexican authorities agreed to process visas on an exceptional basis without requiring players and staff to appear in person at the embassy or undergo fingerprinting.
He said the arrangement was made to facilitate Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup and was achieved through close cooperation between the Iranian and Mexican diplomatic missions in the Turkish capital.
The national team delegation is scheduled to depart for the Mexican city of Tijuana on Saturday, June 6.
The exemption spared players and staff from travelling to Ankara and allowed the squad to remain focused on preparations and daily training sessions in the Turkish resort city of Antalya, where they have been training for the upcoming tournament since last month.
The national team will play their last World Cup warm-up match against Mali on Thursday.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Iran recently shifted its pre-World Cup training camp from the United States to Mexico, where the team is expected to stay before travelling for its tournament matches.
The team’s training base, originally set for Tucson, Arizona, was moved to Tijuana, Mexico, at the request of Iran’s football federation due to security concerns.
The team members have not yet received their visas for the United States.
According to Iran’s Football Federation chief Mehdi Taj, Washington is expected to issue visas for the squad members “quickly.”
Iran secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup earlier this year and is preparing for the tournament through a series of training camps and international friendlies.
