U20 World Wrestling C'ships: Iran FS team grab 1 gold, 3 bronze on day 2

Iranian freestyle wrestlers have grabbed 1 gold and 3 bronze medals in the first 5-weight categories at the Under 20 World Championships in Bulgaria.

Sobhan Yari was Iran’s sole finalist of the day in the 79kg class. He had out-muscled opponents from the US, Turkey and Georgia, before overcoming a grappler from Armenia 5-0 to hang the gold medal around his neck. Moreover, Ahmad Mohammad-Nejad, Hossein Mohammad-Aghaei and Amir-Ali Azar-Pira collected three bronze medals in the 57, 70 and 97kg divisions respectively.

In the meantime, Iran will have the chance to pick up 3 more gold and one bronze in the second 5-weight categories. Armin Habib-Zadeh, Amir-Hossein Firouzpour and Amir-Reza Masoumi have beaten their opponents all the way to the final bouts of the 61, 92 and 125kg categories, while Aref Ranjbari will be bidding for a podium finish in the 86kg bronze medal match.

With 74 points under the belt, Team Iran are now only second to the United States’s 84, with India holding up the third on 60 points.
