Former US President Donald Trump’s tax returns and other financial records are now in the possession of New York prosecutors following a lengthy court battle.

The New York prosecutor’s office has obtained the voluminous records as part of a criminal investigation into Trump and his family-run Trump Organization, a spokesman for the office confirmed on Thursday.

Danny Frost, a spokesman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, said the office received the documents on Monday only hours after the Supreme Court denied a move by Trump attorneys to keep them secret.

The documents dated from January 2011 to August 2019 include tax filings, financial statements, work papers, and contracts pertaining to the preparation of the tax returns.

Vance is investigating whether the former president, or the Trump Organization, engaged in tax fraud, insurance fraud, or other schemes.

He started his probe after it was revealed that Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, before the 2016 election, made hush money payments to keep two women quiet about their claims that they had had sexual encounters with Trump.

He had suggested in a court filing his subpoena was also related to “possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct” at the president’s business, the Trump Organization, including insurance and bank fraud.

Trump was the only modern president who refused to release his tax returns. Before he was elected, he had promised to do so.

The new development comes after a 17-month-long effort by the former president and his legal team to prevent prosecutors from obtaining the documents, which were finally turned over by his longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA.

The documents will not be made public as they are subject to grand jury secrecy rules, however, if criminal charges are filed then relevant portions will be presented to court as evidence.

In a statement, Trump called the district attorney’s investigation a “fishing expedition.”
