Much to the dismay of the Americans, the 2018 election in Iraq was concluded with a landslide victory for factions somehow affiliated to the Iranians - including the Popular Mobilization Forces. As Donald Trump came to power in the US, the White House ratcheted up its pressure on Baghdad. Their intensifying pressures finally resulted in the resignation of Adil Abdul-Mahdi, the Iraqi Prime Minister of the time, who had strong ties with Tehran.
