A senior Iranian lawmaker says terrorism is backfiring on its supporters who are conspiring against the government in Syria.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian Parliament's Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, made the remark in a meeting with Syria’s Parliament Speaker Hadiyeh al-Abbas in Damascus on Wednesday, Syria’s official news agency, SANA, reported.

Boroujerdi praised victories achieved by the Syrian army in the war against terrorism in the Arab country.

He expressed confidence that the Syrian army would emerge victorious over the foreign-backed militancy, pointing out that the war against Syria is a US-Israeli project.

The US is backing, arming and financing terrorist groups but claims at the same time that it is fighting terrorism, the Iranian lawmaker noted.

Boroujerdi also underlined the strong historical relations between Syria and Iran, stressing that the bonds between the two countries cannot be broken.

The Syrian speaker, for her part, lauded Iran’s support for her country.

Abbas stressed that the long-standing strategic relations between Syria and Iran constitute a real guarantor for the future of the region in the face of Western and Israeli plots.

In a press statement following the meeting, Boroujerdi described his talks with Abbas as “very useful and constructive,” and reaffirmed Iran’s support for Syria in the face of terrorism.

The senior Iranian parliamentarian arrived in Damascus on Wednesday after his official visit to Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, where he held talks with senior Lebanese officials, including Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, Prime Minister Tammam Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

In Beirut, Boroujerdi also held talks with Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on the latest political and security developments in the region.
