Iranian national kickboxing squad crowned world champion

The national Iranian male kickboxing team has won the World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) World Championship 2015 in Spain.

On Monday, the final day of the competitions in the small tourist town of Albir, situated 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Valencia, the Iranian side topped the medal count table with a total of 13 medals (8 golds, three silvers and two bronzes).

In the junior 55-kilogram weight category, Amir Hossein Akbari conceded defeat to a representative from Germany, claiming the silver medal.

Iran’s Omid Tayyebi picked up the first gold for the Islamic Republic in the junior 60-kilogram class.

Amir Hossein Sartipi also won his final bout on Monday and clinched the gold medal in the open weight division.  

Later in the day, Saeedeh Fardsanei fell to her German opponent in the final contest of women’s 55-kilogram class and was awarded the silver medal.

Somayyeh Ghamari won another silver medal for Iran in the over 65-kilogram weight class, while Mina Karami snatched a bronze in the 65-kilogram category.

Additionally, Ahmad Nikkar, Hossein Hosseinzadeh, Hossein Hayati, Sohrab Bahrami, Sina Karimiyan and Ja’far Ahmadi received gold medals in the men’s 60-kilogram, 65-kilogram, 70-kilogram, 80-kilogram, minus 90-kilogram and over 90-kilogram low kick style competitions.

In the full contact style, Mojtaba Hosseini lost to his American rival in the final contest, and scooped up a silver medal for Iran.

The 2015 World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) World Championship opened in Spain on October 28, and wrapped up on November 2.

The tournament saw the participation more than 1,800 kickboxers from 65 countries, including Britain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Spain and the United States.

Germany’s national kickboxing team finished as vice champion, while the British and Spanish sides shared the bronze podium.
