Iran's Haniyeh Shahpari claimed her second silver medal of the week after finishing runner-up in the women's 3,000 meters at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong.

On Saturday, Shahpari clocked 9:49.42 to secure second place on the third day of competition at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, improving both the Iranian U20 and senior national records in the event.

The championships are being held from May 28 to 31 and feature more than 600 athletes from over 30 Asian countries and regions.

China's Shanglu Pan won the gold medal in 9:36.02, while Uzbekistan's Dilnoza Hoshimova took bronze with a time of 10:29.72.

The performance marked another milestone for Shahpari, who had already captured silver in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase a day earlier.

In that race, she also set a new Iranian national record by clocking 10:26.34 and achieved the qualifying standard for the World Athletics U20 Championships.

Her latest run lowered her own Iranian U20 record of 9:58.44 and also eclipsed the national senior mark of 9:54.11 previously held by Parichehr Shahi.

Shahpari's medal added to Iran's growing tally at the continental event.
On the opening day, teammate Maryam Ahmadi earned silver in the women's 1,500 meters to give Iran its first podium finish of the championships.

Organized by the Asian Athletics Association, the Asian U20 Athletics Championships is the continent's premier competition for athletes under the age of 20 and serves as a pathway to the World Athletics U20 Championships.

The 2026 edition includes a full program of track and field disciplines across four days of competition in Hong Kong.
