A new Gallup poll has shown that a majority of Americans, 57%, support the creation of an independent Palestinian state, as support for Israel among US citizens has dramatically decreased over the genocidal war in Gaza.

The survey published by the US-based research firm on Friday indicated that 57% of respondents expressed support for an independent Palestinian state, while 28% opposed the idea and 15% expressed no opinion.

By party, the poll said, support for an independent Palestinian state stands at 77% among Democrats, 57% among independents and 33% among Republicans.

The poll also found that 41% of respondents said they sympathize more with Palestinians, while 36% said they sympathize more with Israelis.

That marks a dramatic shift in American sympathies in West Asia toward the Palestinians, which accelerated during the genocidal war in Gaza.

Three years ago, 54% of Americans said their sympathies lie more with the Israelis, and 31% saying the same about the Palestinians.

More independents support Palestinians

The poll also showed that independents have joined Democrats in supporting Palestinians.

According to the poll, 65% of Democrats sympathize more with Palestinians and 17% with Israelis. Their sympathies have not shifted much over the past year, having strongly leaned towards the Palestinians in 2025 after initially tilting that way in 2023.

Among independents, 41% said they sympathize more with Palestinians and 30% with Israelis. Last year, they were more sympathetic towards the Israelis, by 42 percent to 34 percent.

Meanwhile, seventy percent of Republicans said they sympathize more with Israel, while 13% go with the Palestinians. The figures reflect a 10 percentage point drop in Republican support for Israel from 2024, marking the lowest level since 2004.

The survey also showed that support for Palestinians was strongest among younger Americans.

Some 53% of US citizens aged between 18 and 34 are more sympathetic to the Palestinian people, while 23% favored Israel, a record low for the age group.

The poll also found for the first time that middle-aged Americans, those 35 to 54, expressed more sympathy for the Palestinians than the Israelis, nearly reversing their 2025 positions.

While those over 55 are still more sympathetic to Israelis, for the first time since 2005, less than half of older Americans have said they sympathize more with the Israelis (only 49 percent).
