Iran-US nuclear talks
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has departed for Switzerland for the second round of negotiations with the United States. A diplomatic and technical delegation is accompanying the foreign minister to Geneva. The new round of indirect nuclear talks with Washington are scheduled to take place on Tuesday with Oman maintaining its mediating role. Araghchi will also hold talks with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency during the visit. This round of indirect negotiations follows the first session which was held in the Omani capital Muscat earlier this month. The top Iranian diplomat had described the first round as a good start.
Israel Gaza aggression
At least 13 Palestinians have been killed in new Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip, despite a ceasefire meant to halt the regime’s genocidal war. Israeli armored vehicles opened heavy fire in Gaza City, including the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, while the Jabalia refugee camp in the north came under artillery shelling and direct gunfire. Large-scale demolition and explosions of buildings were also carried out in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. The death toll in Gaza since October 2023 when Israel launched the genocide in Gaza now exceeds 72,000. Meanwhile, Hamas said Israel “committed a new massacre by targeting displaced people in their tents. It said this criminal escalation comes ahead of the so-called Board of Peace meeting, in a clear attempt to impose a bloody reality on the ground and send a message that all efforts and bodies concerned with establishing calm in Gaza are meaningless, and that the occupation is continuing its aggression. The meeting, set to be held in Washington on Wednesday, is expected to focus on raising funds for the reconstruction of the war-torn territory as part of a Gaza ceasefire plan.
Israeli police brutality
Israeli police have clashed with ultra-Orthodox Jews during a mandatory military conscription in Bnei Brak, east of Tel Aviv in the occupied Palestinian territories. Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox demonstrators, known as Haredi Jews, poured into the streets during the operation. Police used pepper spray and batons to disperse the crowd, injuring several protesters. Demonstrators also overturned police vehicles and set ablaze police motorcycles. The incident follows a similar confrontation last month in Bnei Brak during an event honoring parents of recruits from a unit associated with ultra-Orthodox soldiers. The Haredim, who make up about 13 percent of the Israeli population, have long opposed compulsory military service. They say mandatory service endangers their religious identity and community life.
