Gaza ceasefire violations

The Israeli military is continuing attacks across the Gaza Strip and causing more casualties despite a ceasefire agreement. A child was among those injured in attacks on tents for displaced Palestinians near the so-called Netzarim corridor. Israeli warplanes and tanks also targeted the northern Gaza City. Attacks also continued in and around Khan Yunis in the south, injuring two more civilians. The Palestinian death toll since a ceasefire was agreed in Gaza is close to 600 while over 1,600 have been injured. The death toll since October 2023 when Israel launched the genocide in Gaza stands above 72,000.

US govt. shutdown

In the United States, a lengthy shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security has only just begun. An increasing number of murders by ICE security forces has shocked the nation, and now galvanized the opposition Democratic Party into action.

Transatlantic rift

European leaders are calling for stronger collective defense and security as Trans-Atlantic tensions reach new levels. NATO chief Mark Rutte also said the alliance is shifting toward a more European-led posture. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that a “deep divide” has emerged between Europe and the United States, citing widening disagreements over politics and trade. Trans-Atlantic tensions have been rising during US President Donald Trump’s second term, as he pushes European governments to boost defense spending and take more responsibility for their security. The more recent dispute erupted after Trump suggested military action could be an option in his bid to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. European leaders denounced the remark as neo colonialism.
