California Governor Gavin Christopher Newsom has denounced US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy as deeply destructive, describing him as an “invasive species” with a sell-by date.
“Donald Trump is temporary,” Newsom said on Friday in a speech delivered at the Munich Security Conference (MSC).
He warned that Trump’s administration has become the world’s leading source of instability, tearing down what he called long-standing international values.
“Our republic is being destroyed in real time,” the governor said, painting a grim picture of the nation’s current trajectory.
Newsom also noted a growing resistance. “I see a growing determination in Europe” and across the world to counter Trump’s destructive policies, he said.
“I think Europe feels more united today than it has in a long time,” he added, “and that is perhaps the only merit of Donald Trump.”
The governor condemned the harsh measures of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), highlighting recent violence during Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota, where people vanished suddenly, and two were shot dead.
“The immune system has now been activated, both among the American people and increasingly across the world,” Newsom said.
Trump, he said, exploits weaknesses and responds unpredictably to conviction, character, and determination.
Looking ahead, Newsom predicted a severe defeat for Republicans in the midterm elections this fall. “They would be crushed,” he said.
Newsom is regarded within the Democratic Party as a prominent figure and is considered a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
In a Friday interview, he confirmed he will not attend Trump’s White House breakfast for the National Governors Association (NGA) on February 20, nor will he join the private dinner with state leaders, after Trump rescinded invitations to fellow Democratic governors Westley Watende Omari Moore of Maryland and Jared Schutz Polis of Colorado.
