India-Pakistan conflict

Pakistan’s military says Indian forces have targeted three airbases with air-to-surface missiles as tensions between the nuclear powers continue to escalate. Pakistan’s military says it intercepted many missiles fired at the airbases and that the attack has been a failure. It also said it had launched operations to respond to the Indian attack. Media reports said blasts rang out across Indian-administered Kashmir and the city of Amritsar in neighboring Punjab state. At least 48 people have been reported killed so far, 32 of them in Pakistan, since India launched missiles on Wednesday that it said targeted “terrorist camps” in Pakistan. Pakistan retaliated with a barrage of artillery strikes. The clashes follow escalating tension between the two since a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan has denied any involvement.

US-Israel Gaza genocide

Israel presses ahead with the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza as its latest strikes target an UNRWA aid facility in Jabalia refugee camp meant for the displaced people in the northern Gaza Strip. The Israeli attack on UNRWA has killed four people while injuring dozens of others. Separately, two airstrikes have targeted a populated market in Gaza City, killing at least thirty people. Scores of people were also injured in that attack. To the south of the strip in Khan Yunis, an Israeli drone strike killed three people. Meanwhile, civil defense teams have recovered the body of a three-month-old infant from under the rubble of an earlier bombardment. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll since October 2023 is nearing 52,800, most of them women and children.

Second 'Nakba' unfolding

A United Nations committee says what Israel is doing in Gaza is an instance of ethnic cleansing. The committee tasked with probing the Israeli human rights record says military operations are a smokescreen for rapid land grabbing, forced evictions and ethnic cleansing. The aim, the committee said, is to replace Palestinian communities with Israeli settlers. The committee is also warning that the world is now witnessing another Nakba, with the regime inflicting unimaginable suffering on Palestinians. The Nakba, or catastrophe, marks the establishment of Israel in 1948 on territories it seized from Palestinians through mass killings and the use of force.
