In a nutshell: The 9/11 attacks

On the morning of September 11, 2001, George W. Bush, the then-US president, was visiting an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida. He was sitting casually inside a classroom and listening to a teacher read out words and letters to second-graders when his chief of staff, Andrew Card, walked up to him and whispered something scary into his ear. Two hijacked airplanes had crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.
