Iran-Saudi rapprochement

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has met his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal Bin Farhan in Tehran. They discussed cooperation in different areas including economy. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said they talked about the establishment of a joint economic commission as well as commissions on drug trafficking and environmental issues. Iran’s top diplomat said they also discussed efforts to protect regional security through multi-lateral mechanisms as both governments believe regional security is the key to prosperity of nations in the region. Bin Farhan, for his part, said they held positive talks on the normalization process between the two countries. Bin Farha also said the Saudi embassy in Tehran will be reopened soon. He said he hopes the normalization of ties will positively impact the region. Iran has already reopened its embassy in Riyadh and a consulate in the Saudi port city of Jeddah. The two countries ended their 7-year -long diplomatic rift under a China-brokered deal in March. Riyadh severed its ties with Tehran in 2016 following angry protests in Iran over the execution of cleric Nimr-al-Nimr in the kingdom.

Palestinian pres. slams us

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has lashed out at the United States over its double standards toward the Palestinian people and their cause. Abbas made the remarks in an interview with a Chinese media group during his recent visit to Beijing. He called the US an obstacle to the so-called 'two-state solution', saying Washington only talked about the plan but never implemented it. The Palestinian president said, his people will fight to the end to defend their legitimate national rights. He added, Palestine will not lose heart and hopes that all countries in the world jointly work for its just cause. Abbas visited China this week and held talks with top officials, including President Xi Jinping. His trip came as China has extended its sway into issues previously considered exclusive areas of influence by the US. China was among the first countries to recognize Palestine as a state.

Defying protest ban

Clashes break out between police and demonstrators defying a ban on protests against the construction of a train line linking Lyon, France to Turin, Italy.  Some 5,000 people have taken part in the protest. They set up tents and makeshift camps in the area in an effort to stop the project. Protesters say the plan to build 270 km of high speed train line which includes a 58 km of tunnel through the Alps will have heavy environmental impact. They say the project has already led to the drying up of several natural water sources in the area.
