Iran support for Palestine

Hamas' political bureau chief has hailed Iran’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their resistance against Israel and the US. Ismail Haniyeh likened Iran to a strong pillar, which the Palestinian resistance front relies on. He made the remarks in response to a message by the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps. Brigadier General Esmail Qaani had hailed the victory of resistance forces against Israel during the recent aggression on the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh also stressed that the Israeli assassination of resistance commanders had failed to intimidate Palestinian people. He said Israel erroneously assumed that the aggression would help it emerge from a domestic crisis, but it actually aggravated those woes.

UK industrial action

The UK health service is set to come under further strain as junior doctors in England plan more strikes. The strikes will take place from June 13 to 17. They come after negotiations with the government collapsed. The British Medical Association says the government’s pay offer of 5-percent is "nowhere near" making up for the pay erosion caused by inflation. The doctors’ union also warned of strikes throughout the summer if the government did not change its position. The government says such pay rises would only further inflame inflation. A series of strikes by UK healthcare workers in recent months has led to the cancellation of numerous appointments and disruption of patient care.

US high inflation

A survey by the Federal Reserve reveals that inflation has eroded US households' sense of financial security. The study showed that the number of respondents who said they were doing "at least okay financially" dropped by five percent in 2022 compared to the year before. A record 35-percent of the respondents said they were worse off financially. Many of the respondents said they had reduced their savings to make ends meet, delayed purchases or opted for cheaper products. The survey also highlighted discrimination in the US with Blacks, Latinos and people with disabilities reporting the biggest impact from inflation. Annual inflation in the US peaked at over nine percent last summer, the highest since the early 1980s.
