Liz Truss resigns

Britain’s Prime Minister Liz Truss says she is resigning as prime minister. This is after tumultuous six weeks into her job that included financial market chaos and the replacement of two of her most senior ministers. Truss said a leadership election will be completed within the next week. She said she would stay on as prime minister until a successor is chosen to serve as Tory leader. The end for Truss came after a key minister resigned and many Tory lawmakers rebelled over an important vote in chaotic scenes at the House of Commons late Wednesday. By Thursday morning, more than a dozen Conservative lawmakers had publicly urged Truss to resign. Media speculations say Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, two contenders in the previous leadership contest this year, are believed to be running for prime minister. But Labor leader Keir Starmer says an immediate general election is required.

UK child sex abuse

A seven-year inquiry into child sexual abuse in Britain has published its findings. It says the issue has become an "epidemic" in the UK. According to the findings, in any group of 200 children, 40 would be victims before the age of 16. The figures also show the age of victims is going down, with a 45% rise in offences in recent years against those under four. The report says religious and political bodies have covered up allegations to protect the perpetrators. The abuse involved children, babies and toddlers and was often accompanied by extreme violence and acts of sadism. The independent inquiry into child sexual abuse was set up in 2014, following a series of horrific revelations of abuse involving celebrities and political figures.
