Typhoon Muifa hits Japanese island

Typhoon Muifa brought heavy rain, violent winds and official warnings of high waves as it passed close to Ishigaki island in Japan's Okinawa prefecture on Monday (September 12).

Officials from the Japan Meteorological Agency warned that winds near the storm's centre could reach speeds of up to 144 km/h (89 mph), with gusts of up to 216 km/h (134 mph), national broadcaster NHK reported.

Muifa, the 12th storm of this year's Pacific typhoon season, is expected to continue travelling north towards the east coast of China over the coming days.

The storm follows on the heels of Typhoon Hinnamnor, which pounded parts of the westernmost main Japanese island of Kyushu with heavy rain a week earlier and forced flight cancellations.
