Bin Salman France visit

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Paris and his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked outrage. The widow of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi slammed Macron for welcoming the executioner of her fiancée. Hatice Chengiz said all international investigations carried out so far recognize the Saudi Crown Prince’s responsibility in the gruesome murder. Three rights groups have called on French authorities to open a criminal investigation into Mohammed bin Salman. They filed a legal complaint with a Paris court saying the royal should not have immunity from prosecution for being the Saudi head of State. Bin Salman arrived in Paris on Thursday after a stopover in Greece. Khashoggi was killed in 2018 by Saudi agents inside the country’s consulate in Istanbul.

Russia-Ukraine war

Fighting rages across Ukraine as Russia strikes the outskirts of the capital Kiev for the first time in weeks. A Regional governor says 15 people have died during Russian strikes in Vysh-horod district near the capital. In the northwest of Kiev, more than 20 missiles have been fired at the city of Chernihiv. Meanwhile Ukraine has started a campaign in the south of the country to retake the cities of Kherson and Zaporizhia. Ukrainian officials say they are aiming to isolate Kherson from other parts of Russian-controlled areas. They say they have struck five Russian strongholds in the region. Also in eastern Ukraine, Russia is closing in on the Donetsk province after shelling the strategic town of Bakhmut.

Tensions over Taiwan

Taiwan says it will maintain its cooperation with the United States amid rising tensions between Washington and Beijing over the self-ruled island. According to a statement by Taiwan’s foreign ministry, the territory will continue to develop its close security partnership with Washington. The reaction came after a phone call between the Chinese and US presidents. During their conversation, Xi Jinping strongly warned Joe Biden against a potential visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
