Analyst: Violence in US is ‘chickens coming home to roost’

A Black American analyst and rights activist said the violence that American youth face is a direct result of the turmoil that the United States has caused throughout the world.

Since the Buffalo, New York, shooting on May 14, when a white supremacy sympathizer opened fire at a supermarket and killed 10 Black people, dozens of mass shootings have been reported across the United States, an average of two per day.

Desmond Abrams, who is a Black American community organizer and anti-racist strategist, told Press TV in an interview on Thursday that gun violence in US schools “shows the dangers of a dying empire.”

“Our children and our elderly are not protected by violence. But this is a direct result of the fact that America has brought so much death and destruction into the world with no clear solutions for the violence,” he stated.

“What’s behind these horrific shootings is a lack of solutions to the violence that America has perpetuated throughout the world and at home. Most of these shootings are from young white men disillusioned by the fact that they are losing power and status in an ever-changing world,” the analyst said.

“The United States has no solutions for such disillusionment as it continues to try to cling onto power at home and abroad,” he added.

For decades, car crashes were the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 19. But the gap between car crash deaths and firearms deaths began to steadily narrow in recent years. In 2020, gun violence overtook car accidents to become the No. 1 cause of death for US children.

“I think this is an example of chickens coming home to roost,” Abrams said, reminiscent of the historic speech Pakistani-American scholar made on November 4, 1975, at the University of Michigan.

“You cannot be the bully of the world, the destroyer of civilization, without it affecting the lives of your citizens at home,” he said.

“The violence that American youth face is a direct result of the turmoil that America has caused throughout the world,” he stated.

“This is what it looks like when empires die. Disillusionment, violence, and death are the result of a society that can only pay for war and aggression and not the betterment of the people who live in the dying empire,” concluded Abrams who is the founder and executive director of Brothers Doing Better, a US-based racial and social justice organization.
