Fans, protesters gather outside stadium as Tokyo Olympics conclude

As Tokyo doused its Olympic flame in a closing ceremony on Sunday (August 8), crowds gathered outside the National Stadium to capture a glimpse of the event before it came to an end.

Despite heavy security and government guidance, people gathered outside the Olympic Stadium in the capital to watch on from the outside as the games drew to a close a few metres away.

Around a hundred protesters carrying signs that read "Olympics kill the poor" and "We don't need the Olympics" jostled with police officers outside the stadium earlier, although they were outnumbered by the crowd that lined the streets.

Moments after the flame was extinguished in the Olympic Stadium a volley of multi-colored fireworks lit up the night sky. The Tokyo Olympics were originally intended to show Japan's recovery from a devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in 2011.

The closing ceremony doused its Olympic flame on Sunday in a ceremony that echoed the restraint of a Games held without spectators and transformed by the global pandemic, dazzling sport and deeply person turmoil.
