Trump lambasts NY criminal probe as part of ‘greatest witch hunt’ in US history

Former US President Trump has harshly criticized the criminal probe into the Trump Organization, describing as a "continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History."

“This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in American history,” Trump said in a statement on Wednesday.

“No other President in history has had to put up with what I have had to, and on top of all that, I have done a great job for our Country, whether it’s taxes, regulations, our Military, Veterans, Space Force, our Borders, speedy creation of a great vaccine (said to be a miracle!), and protecting the Second Amendment,” he added. “This is purely political, and an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election, and it’s being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors.”

The comments by Trump come after the US media reported on Tuesday that a grand jury was seated to weigh any criminal evidence against him and his company and decide if indictments should be issued.

The prosecutor overseeing the criminal probe into former President Donald Trump’s business dealings has convened, a move that signals charges could be coming.

Cyrus Vance, the Manhattan district attorney, recently convened the grand jury that will sit three days a week for six months, the Post reported, citing two people familiar with the development.

The Post also said in its report that the grand jury will hear evidence in other cases as well during that time.

The investigations into the Trump Organization were launched after a congressional testimony by his former personal attorney Michael Cohen, who turned on his former boss since pleading guilty in 2018 to various fraud and campaign finance charges.

In his statement, Trump also referred to Cohen as a "low life" person, saying that the prosecutors are using their prosecutorial powers to harass him over political reasons.

"That is what these investigations are all about—a continuation of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of the United States," Trump said. "Working in conjunction with Washington, these Democrats want to silence and cancel millions of voters because they don’t want 'Trump' to run again. As people are being killed on the sidewalks of New York at an unprecedented rate, as drugs and crime of all kinds are flowing through New York City at record levels, with absolutely nothing being done about it, all they care about is taking down Trump."
