Two-thirds of Republicans believe Biden not legitimately elected US president
About two-thirds of Republicans believe that Joe Biden was not legitimately elected as the US president in the disputed 2020 election, according to a new poll.
The recent survey, which was launched almost a fortnight after Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20 as president, showed that only 33% of Republicans considered Biden a legitimately-elected president of the US.
The results of the poll, which was conducted between Jan. 28 and Feb. 1 by the Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and released on Friday, showed that 33% of Republicans say Biden was legitimately elected as the 46th president of the United States while 65% say he was not.
The poll also showed that overall, roughly two-thirds of Americans say Biden was legitimately elected, with nearly all Democrats saying so.
Former President Donald Trump and his allies disputed the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election for months, arguing without positive court proof that it was stolen and that there was fraudulent voting in pivotal states.
Courts dismissed the allegations of election fraud in lawsuits while state and local election officials verified that there was no evidence of voting fraud in the disputed election.
Trump’s own attorney general said the widespread fraud claimed by Trump's camp lacked evidence.
Other findings of the AP-NORC survey, which interviewed 1,055 adults and was estimated to have an error margin of plus/minus 3.8 percentage points for the whole population, included half of Americans say the Senate should convict Trump over the deadly Capitol Hill riot by his supporters.
Two-thirds of Americans believe Trump bears at least some responsibility for the deadly riot which left several people dead, according to the poll.
The survey found that about 1 in 10 of the Republicans thought that the Senate should convict Trump over the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill.
About 3 in 10 of Senate Republicans held the former president at least partially responsible for the deadly riot conducted by the Trump loyalists in the US capital city, it showed.
The AP-NORC survey also suggests that Republican leaders may face challenges in a post-Trump era with about two-thirds of Americans have an unfavorable view of Senate Republicans.
According to the poll, about three-quarters of Republicans say they have a favorable view of Trump.
