Lebanese Hezbollah allies protest against top US general visit

Pro-Hezbollah and anti-US protesters scuffled briefly with the Lebanese army on Wednesday during a demonstration held against what they said was US interference in the internal affairs of the country.

The protesters, waving flags of Hezbollah and the Lebanese Communist party, gathered near the airport as a top US general was landing for talks.

The protest comes after comments on June 28 by US ambassador in Lebanon Dorothy Shea about Hezbollah - which the US labels as a terrorist group - almost sparked a diplomatic rift.

The Lebanese state news agency NNA identified the top general as the head of US Central Command Marine General Kenneth Mckenzie, and said he was holding talks with President Michel Aoun and was due to meet with other top officials.

Lebanon is grappling with an acute economic crisis seen as the worst threat to its stability since the 1975-90 civil war.
