Afghanistan to release prisoners as it battles against COVID-19 spread

The Afghan government says it is ready to release up to ten thousand prisoners due to coronavirus outbreak in the country. The decree signed by President Ashraf Ghani orders the release of women and children as well as old people.
Afghan officials made clear that the prisoners’ release plan will not cover those charged with committing crimes such as terrorism and crimes against the national security of the country.
As part of precautionary measures, the government also banned meetings with prisoners to reduce the risk of coronavirus spread in the country.
The fear of COVID 19 outbreak in the country has not only prompted the Afghan government to release up to ten thousand prisoners. The Afghan government is also negotiating with the Taliban militant group on the release of 5 thousand Taliban inmates, an issue that has so far brought significant changes to the policies of both, the Afghan government and the Taliban.
