Talks on Syria

The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey are meeting in Moscow for talks on the ongoing crisis in Syria. Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is holding a trilateral meeting with Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and Turkey’s Mevlut Chavushoglu. Earlier, the three diplomats held bilateral meetings. Ankara says the meetings focus on all aspects of cooperation among the three countries on the crisis in Syria. But according to Moscow, the talks will focus on the humanitarian situation in the war-torn nation. Russia, Iran and Turkey have been trying to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis since last year, when they initiated negotiations in Kazakhstan.

Yemen mourning

Saudi Arabia is pressing ahead with its airstrikes in Yemen as people in the capital Sana’a have held a funeral for the slain leader of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council. There has been no report of casualties in the airstrike that targeted an area close to the funeral ceremony. The event was held to bid farewell to Saleh al-Samad, who was killed last week in a Saudi airstrike in the western province of Hudaydah. The top Ansarullah figure lost his life after Saudi warplanes bombarded his residence in the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah. The Saudi war on Yemen began in March 2015. Since then, more than 14,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, have been killed.

North Korea hails summit

North Korea has hailed a summit between the leaders of the two Koreas as “historic” that paves the way for the start of a new era for the two neighbors. North Korea’s state news agency, KCNA, said the summit opened the way for national reconciliation and unity, peace and prosperity. During their landmark meeting on Friday, the North and South Korean leaders pledged to formally end the 1950s Korean War, and pursue the complete denuclearization of the peninsula. The peace talks were held in Panmunjom village along the demilitarized zone.

Gaza in mourning

Palestinians mourn the death of a 15-year-old teenager who succumbed to his injuries on Friday, after being shot by Israeli troops. People of Gaza carried the body of Azzam Aweida, wrapped in a Palestinian flag, to his hometown of Khan Younis and then took him to the cemetery. Aweida was targeted by Israeli fire during an anti-occupation protest along the so-called buffer zone on Friday. His death brings the number of anti-occupation protesters killed by Israeli fire to 46. Palestinians have been staging weekly rallies for the 'Great March of Return' since March 30, calling for their land to be returned and their self-determination right to be recognized.

Armenia protest call

Armenia is gearing up for yet another wave of protests called by the country’s opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan. Pashinyan urged people to take out to the streets with “new force” to throw their support behind his premiership. The call for protests comes after two weeks of anti-government rallies that led to the resignation of Serzh Sarkisian as prime minister. He had served as president for a decade. Sarkisian and his ruling Republican Party are accused of clinging to power. The opposition has issued an ultimatum to lawmakers. They say Pashinyan has to be elected as the new prime minister by May 1. Pashinyan's party, however, does not have enough votes to make that happen.
