Korean leaders seek permanent peace

The leaders of North and South Korea have agreed on denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. Kim and Moon were speaking after they signed a joint declaration. It reaffirmed lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, with the two countries promising to cooperate to that end. The declaration was the culmination of a historic summit between the two Koreas. The summit was the first in more than a decade, and was held in the Demilitarized Zone village of Panmunjom. The two nations held two more summits in 2000 and 2007, after they ended their war with a truce 65 years ago. Friday’s declaration converted the truce into a peace treaty.

Markets react positively to two Korea’s summit

Asian markets react positively to the historic summit between the two Koreas, as well as reports of strong US earnings. Seoul’s Kospi was among the best performers Friday while South Korean won climbed against the US dollar. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also performed well, ending the week on a positive note. The upbeat mood from the meeting was reinforced with positive news from Wall Street where tech companies post higher first-quarter profits.

Armenia’s political turmoil

Armenian opposition leader, Nikol Pashinyan, says anti-government protests will continue as the acting prime minister refuses to talk to him. Pashinyan said the opposition will boycott possible early parliamentary elections amid the crisis, which has gripped the country for the past two weeks. This, after the protest leader meet with the country’s president, but not with the acting premier to discuss ways out of the political stalemate. Pashinyan and his supporters insist the whole ruling system must cede power due to alleged corruption. Earlier, Pashinyan said the country should either have him as prime minister or remain without any.

March of Return toll

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have clashed with Israeli forces near the so-called buffer zone as part of the Great March of Return rallies. At least one Palestinian has been killed and nearly 170 others injured in the violence. The wounded include reporters and medics. The rallies which began following Friday prayers in both Gaza and the West Bank are under way for the fifth week in a row. Some demonstrators hurled stones and rolled burning tires toward the fence in Gaza. At least 43 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the rallies began in the area on March 30. The protests dubbed the 'Great March of Return' revives a longstanding demand for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland. The refugees were driven out of Palestine when Israel was created in 1948. The protests are scheduled to culminate on May 15, when Palestinians mark Nakba Day, or the Day of Catastrophe, commemorating their displacement 70 years ago.

Damascus terror attack

Terrorists have once again launched a deadly rocket attack on the Syrian capital, Damascus. The attack, which targeted southern Damascus, has left at least two civilians dead. Eight others have also sustained injuries following the incident. This, as the Syrian army is consolidating its grip on areas where terrorists are holed up south of the capital Damascus. Government forces targeted a building belonging to armed groups in the Hajar al-Aswad district, killing an unspecified number of militants. The army is advancing toward Hajar al-Aswad from several directions. Government forces are also conducting an all-out offensive against terrorists occupying parts of the nearby Yarmouk camp, which is home to Palestinian refugees. The Syrian army is edging closer to eradicating all militant groups from the suburbs of the capital.
