Volunteer fighters from Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilization Units, have begun an operation to cut off the supply lines between Mosul and Raqqah in Syria and tighten the siege against the Daesh Takfiri terrorists. This is part of a large-scale offensive which the Iraqi army, volunteer Shia and Sunni fighters, as well as Kurdish forces launched last week to retake Mosul.

A political commentator and activist believes the Popular Mobilization Forces’ operation is a “significant move” because it will cover the western area of the strategic city of Mosul and obstruct the escape route for Daesh terrorists.

“You cannot allow the terrorists to escape from Iraq to go and enhance the capability of the terrorist organizations whether it is ISIS (Daesh) or al-Nusra or any other terrorist groups and be safe in the future because they have access to both countries, access to most cities, access to supply lines and so on,” Sabah Jawad told Press TV in an interview on Saturday.

“So the most important thing is what the popular mobilization forces are doing it is going to be crucial area, it is going to cut off Mosul completely and to start a campaign in Mosul to liberate Mosul free and also to cut off the supply line from Mosul to Syrian territories and also to prevent people from escaping,” he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Jawad noted the United States seeks to allow Daesh terrorists escape from Mosul to Raqqah in order to play the terrorist card in Syria.

However, he said, the United States has failed to achieve its objectives in both Iraq and Syria due to “notable victories” in the ongoing fights against terrorism.

“Soon Aleppo will be liberated, soon Mosul will be liberated and all this American plan will be jeopardized because of the determination of our people to get rid of terrorism once and for all,” he stated.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by gruesome violence ever since Daesh mounted a large-scale offensive in the country in June 2014.

The terrorist group also has a presence in neighboring Syria, where Syrian government forces are pushing it out of much of the areas it has overrun.
