Israel views Lebanon as main obstacle to its expansionist goals: Amal Movement MP
A lawmaker from the political wing of the Amal Movement has condemned the recurrent Israeli airstrikes, artillery shelling, explosions, and sound-bomb attacks in southern Lebanon, stressing that Lebanon has been the main obstacle to Israeli expansionism over the past decades.
“The Israeli enemy’s insistence on the policy of targeted destruction of all occupied territories in southern Lebanon, which violates the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, provides solid evidence of disregard for international agreements,” Qassem Hashem, a member of the Development and Liberation bloc, said on Monday.
“Basically, the foundation on which this regime rests shows it has never adhered to any agreements and treaties, and will never do so,” Hashem noted.
He added that the Tel Aviv regime will continue to procrastinate, evade, and shirk any commitment, and its refusal to withdraw occupation forces from southern Lebanon substantiates this fact.
“The regime only understands the language of force and seeks to exploit every possible opportunity to continue its occupation; a reality that has been repeated by its political and military authorities,” the Lebanese lawmaker emphasized.
Hashem stated that Israeli officials are rigidly obstinate and do not adhere to the pullout from the so-called pilot zones.
“There is no clear picture of the positive outcomes of the framework agreement, which has rendered the withdrawal deadline endless, and placed it in the hands of the Zionist enemy,” he stated.
“We cannot capitulate to the enemy’s dictates and give it enough time to continue destroying southern towns and villages, especially those along the border. The enemy is seeking to achieve the aggressive goal of creating an uninhabitable zone,” Hashem underscored.
Israel maintains its offensives in Lebanon, despite the signing of a US-sponsored “framework agreement” on June 26 by both sides.
The agreement stipulates a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, commencing with two designated pilot areas.
The assaults also come in the wake of discussions held in Rome regarding the initiation of an Israeli troop withdrawal from two regions in southern Lebanon.
Israel maintains control over regions in southern Lebanon, with some territories being held for many years, while others were captured during the war of 2023-2024 and the offensive that commenced last March.
Ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 4,300 people and wounded over 12,200 since March 2.
