Ayatollah Khamenei hails Iraqis for ‘epic’ funeral processions held for martyred Leader

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei has expressed appreciation to the people of Iraq for their “epic” reception and funeral processions for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, saying the event demonstrated the deep religious and historical bonds between the Iranian and Iraqi nations.

In a message addressed to Iraq's senior religious authorities, scholars, tribal leaders, intellectuals, and people on Saturday, Ayatollah Khamenei praised Iraqis for organizing a “magnificent and deeply meaningful epic” marked by grief, devotion, and loyalty.

The Leader attributed the momentous participation of the Arab nation in the event to the country's longstanding religious heritage and its history of supporting the regional Resistance Front – which was vigorously bolstered in its fight against the global arrogance and the Zionist regime under the martyred Leader.

Referring to the funeral processions, Ayatollah Khamenei said Iraqis welcomed the martyred Leader “with all their hearts” as his body was transferred to the holy shrines in the cities of Najaf and Karbala for funeral events, describing the ceremony as an unprecedented display of solidarity between the peoples of Iran and Iraq.

‘A new chapter of awakening’

The Leader said the massive turnout demonstrated the failure of efforts by rulers in global arrogant powers to create division between the two neighboring nations.

“The participation of tens of millions in Iran and Iraq marked the beginning of a new chapter of awakening and active engagement aimed at overturning the prearranged equations imposed by the arrogant powers,” the message said.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the United States had come to realize that maintaining its “unchallenged and domineering presence” in the region was “nothing more than a futile illusion.”

Looking ahead to this year's Arbaeen pilgrimage – which witnesses the global Shia faithful gather for mourning rituals that mark 40 days since the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussain (AS) – Ayatollah Khamenei expressed certitude that Iraq would once again welcome millions of pilgrims, including those intending to perform the pilgrimage on behalf of the martyred Leader.

The message followed funeral ceremonies in Iraq that Iraqi authorities said drew more than 10 million mourners across Najaf and Karbala, making the event one of the largest funeral processions in the modern history of the two cities.
