Iran says key parts of MoU ineffective, warns US of 'dangerous consequences'

Iran's Foreign Ministry says US military strikes on Iranian coastal monitoring facilities constitute a "flagrant violation" of a memorandum of understanding that ended the recent war between the two countries, warning that Iran's armed forces will respond under the right to self-defense.

"The terrorist US army, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, with a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, committed military aggression against several monitoring and surveillance centers on Iran's southern coast," the ministry said in a statement.

"These aggressive attacks also constitute a flagrant violation of paragraph one of the memorandum of understanding on ending the war regarding the cessation of military operations," it said.

The statement followed a sharp escalation after US President Donald Trump declared the interim agreement with Iran "over", while Washington also revoked a license allowing Iranian oil sales that had been issued under the wartime accord.

"The repetition of illegal attacks against Iran, alongside last night's decision by the US Treasury to revoke the license for Iran's oil sales, which the US government had committed to under paragraph 10 of the memorandum of understanding, the violation of Iranian arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the continuation of the Zionist regime's military aggressions and terrorist acts against Lebanon, have rendered important and fundamental parts of the memorandum of understanding on ending the war ineffective," the statement said.

"The responsibility for the dangerous consequences of this escalation rests with the treaty-breaking US regime," it added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iranian media reported several explosions near Sirik County and Qeshm Island in the southern province of Hormozgan.

A floating pier at Sirik port sustained serious damage in fresh US strikes, and one person was injured, the head of the Shahid Bahonar and Eastern Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Department said.

Hamidreza Mohammadhosseini Takhti, quoted by IRNA, said specialists were assessing "the extent of the damage and the dimensions of the losses."

Takhti said two projectiles struck Sirik port at 12:35 a.m. and 1:35 a.m. local time on Wednesday, with the impacts occurring "within the Sirik port basin."

He said one person was injured and transferred to a medical facility, while three others were treated at the scene.

"All necessary measures to assess the situation, evaluate the damage, secure the area and restore Sirik port to operational conditions are under way," he said.

Takhti said no other ports under the authority's management were targeted in the overnight attacks and that Shahid Bahonar, Tiab, Sirik and Jask ports, as well as the Shahid Haghani passenger terminal in Bandar Abbas and Shahideh Fatemeh Nik passenger terminal on Hormuz Island, were continuing normal operations while observing civil defense requirements.

Iranian media reported that US strikes early on Wednesday also targeted areas including Qeshm Island and the "Posht-e Shahr" fishing pier near the Bandar Abbas fish market, damaging several fishing boats and vessels.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced that one of its personnel, Mohammad Reza Khozini, was martyred while confronting aggressive US drones in the southern port city of Mahshahr.

The Foreign Ministry "strongly" recalled "the international legal obligation of all states, especially neighboring countries located on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf, to prevent aggressor parties from using their territory and facilities to carry out acts of aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

It said "any cooperation in committing the crime of aggression against Iran amounts to complicity and participation in the crime."

The ministry said it "strongly condemns the US's aggressive attacks and repeated breaches of its commitments," recalling “the responsibilities of the United Nations Security Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations with regard to regional and international peace and security".

It stressed that "the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as they have repeatedly demonstrated, will not hesitate in defending Iran's territorial integrity, national sovereignty and national security against US military aggression, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, and will also target the source and origin of the aggression."

The memorandum, brokered with Pakistan and announced in June, called for an immediate end to military operations, negotiations toward a permanent settlement within 60 days and temporary relief from some US sanctions, including measures affecting Iranian oil exports.

This is not the first time that the United States has targeted Iranian soil since the reaching of an MoU between Tehran and Washington in June.

Iran’s Armed Forces have responded to each instance with decisive retaliatory strikes against strategic and sensitive American targets across the region.

This comes at a time when neighboring Iraq hosts extensive funeral processions for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
