Keir Starmer's resignation marks a significant turning point in British politics, bringing an end to a premiership that faced increasing scrutiny over domestic policy, foreign affairs and division within his own Labour Party.

While supporters say he restored Labour to government, critics argue he struggled to maintain public confidence.

I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.

Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first.

That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.

The announcement has now shifted attention to the Labour Party's internal direction as it prepares for a leadership contest.

Senior figures are expected to position themselves ahead of what could be a defining moment for the party's future, with questions over policy direction and unity at the forefront.

One possible contender is Andy Burnham, a Labour Party figure who recently returned to Westminster following an overwhelming win in the Makerfield by-election.

Yeah, I think Andy Burnham will be very good for the United Kingdom, he brings people together.

Like he said, change, hope; the division in the United Kingdom needs to end.

If he repeats what he did in Manchester, the miracle of Manchester, then the nation is going to look up and smile, but if he comes to Westminster and compromises, then he'll be in trouble.

Because he reaches out to the extreme left, including Jeremy Corbyn, and reaches out to the extreme right, including all the Blairites.

So he's a uniting figure, that's why all the MPs, including senior cabinet members, knew he would unite the party and then reach out [sic] to him when he was campaigning, so that he wins.

Starmer's resignation may close a controversial chapter in British politics, but it also opens a new phase of challenges for the Labour Party at a time when Britain is watching closely to see whether the next leadership can restore stability and confidence to the political landscape.
