‘Absurd, deceptive’: Tehran slams US for using ‘coercion’ to get support for anti-Iran Hormuz resolution

The Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations has slammed the United States for using “coercion” to rally support for its politically-motivated draft resolution targeting Iran's legitimate actions in the Strait of Hormuz.

In an X post, the mission condemned as “absurd and deceptive” the US attempt to portray the number of co-sponsors of its anti-Iran resolution as broad international backing and proof of the Islamic Republic’s isolation.

“No number of coerced co-sponsorships can legitimize Washington’s ongoing internationally wrongful acts against Iran, including maritime blockade, attacks on and illegal seizure of Iranian commercial vessels, and hostage-taking of their crews in a manner resembling piracy,” it added.

“Everyone knows that many members joined the draft resolution under political pressure, coercion, and even threats.”

The mission also emphasized that the US claims of broad backing for the anti-Iran resolution are nothing more than a desperate effort to manufacture legitimacy for predetermined political objectives, undermine the credibility of the UN Security Council, and provide political cover for unlawful actions.

Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz to enemies and their allies following the launch on February 28 of the illegal US-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic.

It began exercising far stricter controls last month after US President Donald Trump announced an illegal blockade of Iranian vessels and ports in violation of the terms of a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire that took effect on April 8.

Recently, the United States launched a military campaign supposedly aimed at forcibly reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but it was forced to stop the maneuver amid Iran’s steadfast resilience against American piracy and threats to maritime security.

Last month, a draft Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz circulated by Bahrain and the United States was vetoed by China and Russia.

Tehran has repeatedly said that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz is not simply a maritime crisis or a limited security dispute, but rather a direct result of the unprovoked US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran.
