FM Araghchi condoles martyrdom of Ali Larijani in a ‘terrorist act’ by US, Israel

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has condoled the martyrdom of Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, in a "terrorist act" by the US and the Israeli regime.

In a message of condolence on Wednesday, Araghchi expressed his "utmost regret and sorrow" over the martyrdom of the country’s top security official, extending condolences to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, Larijani's family, and the Iranian nation.

The foreign minister described Larijani as one of the most distinguished figures in Iranian politics, calling him a "symbol of moderation, rationality, and strategic depth."

He said Larijani had become a "rare and influential personality" in the country's decision-making processes, shaped by years of valuable experience in both domestic and international affairs.

Reflecting on his own professional relationship with the late statesman, the foreign minister noted the "privilege of close cooperation" during Larijani's tenure as Speaker of the Parliament and later as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

This collaboration, he stated, provided a valuable opportunity to intimately understand his intellectual and managerial capabilities, as well as his deep patriotism.

Iran’s top diplomat characterized Larijani's passing as a "great and irreparable tragedy" for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

However, despite the loss, the foreign minister affirmed that the country's diplomatic course would remain steady, relying on the "intellectual legacy and experience of cooperation" with the late secretary.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretariat announced the martyrdom of Larijani alongside his son, Mortaza Larijani; the SNSC deputy for security, Alireza Bayat; and a number of their bodyguards.

The statement described martyrdom as Larijani's "long-held dream," achieved after a lifelong struggle to advance the country and its Islamic Revolution.

The Secretariat added that the martyrdom would further steel the resolve of the nation and its officials to persist in elevating the Islamic Republic's stance.

Larijan, who held the position of the top security official since August 2025, also served as a member of Iran's Expediency Council and a senior advisor to the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

He previously served as Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) for 12 years before being succeeded by Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.
