Iran EU terror designations

In a tit-for-tat move, Iran has designated the naval and air forces of EU member states as terrorist organizations. In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the decision by EU members to label the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a terrorist entity. The Ministry said the IRGC is part of Iran’s armed forces and the move by the EU runs counter to the UN Charter and international law. It cited a 2019 Iranian law that envisages reciprocal action against any country supporting or complying with the US decision to designate the IRGC as a terrorist group.

US anti-Iran threats

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff says President Donald Trump is "curious", why Iran has not backed down under pressure as tensions between the two sides simmer. Witkoff made the comments in an interview with FOX News with reference to the talks in Geneva with Iran and the simultaneous US military buildup near Iranian borders. Iran has repeatedly dismissed Trump’s call for full dismantling of its nuclear program as well as constraints on its missile capabilities. Iran has said it is ready for an agreement that removes any concern about its nuclear activities in exchange for removal of the US sanctions. Tehran has also vowed to reciprocate if it is attacked by the US.

Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions

Pakistani fighter jets have launched a series of cross-border airstrikes on Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktika provinces. Afghan sources say the deadly strikes targeted residential buildings and a school, killing women and children. They say a single home housing twenty-three family members was reduced to rubble. Meanwhile, Taliban officials report they have rescued five survivors, but the search continues for those still buried under the rubble. Islamabad confirms the strikes, claiming they targeted seven militant hideouts, including positions linked to Daesh, in response to recent suicide bombings in Pakistan. Pakistani officials accuse the Taliban of allowing Afghan soil to be used for terror, a claim the group strongly rejects. Kabul has condemned the act as a violation of sovereignty, warning of a calculated response to the escalation.
