Iran regional diplomacy

Iran’s foreign minister is in Istanbul for talks with Turkish officials on bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments. Abbas Araghchi said the objectives being articulated by the United States and others clearly necessitate closer consultations, a thorough review of regional issues and coordination of positions. He also touched upon the importance of examining ways to address and overcome regional challenges. Araghchi said Iran and Turkey are great neighbors, hailing the two countries’ bilateral ties in a range of sectors. He made the remarks after landing in Istanbul amid US threats of military actions against Iran and Trump’s contradictory statements. The top Iranian diplomat also pointed to the EU’s move to designate the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a terrorist organization, saying the bloc lacks a proper understanding of its own interests.

Israel Gaza truce violations

Israel has carried out fresh attacks in Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement that was meant to put an end to the regime’s genocidal war. At least four more Palestinians have been killed in a matter of 24 hours. Several people were also injured in an airstrike targeting tents housing the displaced in Khan Yunis. The new strikes come as the IOF has admitted that the Palestinian death toll announced by Gaza’s health ministry has been largely accurate. Reacting to the acknowledgment, Hamas official Basem Naim says Western media outlets should apologize for keeping a lid on the Israeli crimes in Gaza. Naim also said the enemy has admitted that the genocide death toll doesn’t include the ones buried under the rubble. Over 71,600 Palestinians have been confirmed killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza.

Canada-US tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says he expects the US to respect Canada’s sovereignty after reports that American officials have met with Alberta separatists numerous times. Speaking after a meeting with provincial and territorial leaders in Ottawa, Carney touched upon the importance of Canada’s national unity. Carney also said Trump has never raised the issue of Alberta independence during their meetings. His remarks came after the premier of British Columbia accused a group of Alberta independence activists of treason for meeting with the Trump administration. David Eby pointed to a report by American media outlet Financial Times that White House officials met with activists collecting signatures for a possible plebiscite on Alberta independence. There have been tensions in Washington-Ottawa relations recently. Carney said at a Davos meeting that the US-led world order is over.
