US intervention in Latin America
The kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is set to appear at a US Federal court in Manhattan two days after his abduction from Caracas. The case is brought against Nicolas Maduro by the US Attorney’s office in New York. The Venezuelan President is indicted on four counts related to narco-terrorism and conspiracy to possess destructive devices. The same prosecutor’s office had returned an indictment against Nicolas Maduro in 2020 with the same four charges. The indictment adds co-defendants including Maduro’s wife and son. The court is held two days after US forces carried out a military attack against the capital Caracas targeting several civilian centers and abducting President Maduro and his wife. The attack followed months of tension in the Caribbean where the US deployed warships, fighter jets and thousands of forces threatening to attack the South American country.
Global Anti-US rallies
Protesters have gathered in the Sri Lankan capital to denounce Washington’s aggression against Caracas. The demonstrators assembled outside the US embassy, holding banners condemning US intervention in Venezuela. The Indian city of Chennai also saw a similar event, with the police detaining several protesters. Demonstrations also erupted in the South Korean capital outside the US embassy in Seoul. A protester held a fake gun as he wore a mask of the US president in a jab at Donald Trump’s warmongering policies. Others held signs reading “Hands off Venezuela” and “We Condemn Trump’s Kidnapping of Maduro”. Seoul, a close ally of Washington, is yet to react to the US act of aggression, even as condemnations are pouring from across the world.
Israeli violations in Gaza
A war-damaged building in central Gaza has collapsed, killing two Palestinians. Meanwhile, the Israeli regime continues to violate the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. A 14-year-old child was injured in the southern city of Khan Younis. In the west, another fisherman was killed by Israeli naval fire. Intense artillery and helicopter fire also targeted areas in the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis. The Israeli military spent the past day expanding its control, now occupying more than fifty percent of the entire Gaza Strip. They are advancing into several neighborhoods of Gaza City, squeezing Palestinians into smaller areas. The push towards the key Salah al-Din Street is also forcing displaced families sheltering nearby to flee again. Palestinians sheltering in tents continue to suffer from the cold as Israel restricts the entry of aid. The death toll in Gaza since the start of the genocidal war is nearly 71,390.
