Israel Gaza truce violations
The Israeli military has carried out new attacks in Gaza as Tel Aviv fails to adhere to the ceasefire deal with Hamas. Khan Yunis, Deir al-Balah and Gaza City are among the areas targeted in the fresh strikes. In Deir al-Balah, a Palestinian woman was also injured.
Saudi strike on Yemen
Saudi Arabia has targeted the Yemeni port of Mukalla, striking foreign military support for a UAE-baked separatist group. According to Riyadh, the ships carrying weapons arrived in Mukalla from the port of Fujairah in late December to support the separatist group supported by Abu Dhabi. Analysts say the attack underscores strains between Saudi Arabia and the UAE who back rival groups in Yemen. In a statement, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry expressed disappointment that the United Arab Emirates is pressuring forces of the Southern Transitional Council to operate near the Kingdom’s borders. The ministry described the UAE’s steps as highly dangerous and regrettable. It further demanded that Abu Dhabi withdraw its forces from all of Yemen within 24 hours.
Tensions over Taiwan
Tensions between China and the US over Taiwan show no sign of ending. Beijing says it must forcefully counter Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan. The Chinese foreign minister warned that any attempt to block China’s unification with Taiwan will inevitably end in failure. The remarks come as Beijing has begun the second day of military drills around Taiwan. The Chinese military said on Tuesday that it had deployed navy destroyers, bombers and other forces as part of the drills aimed at external forces. The exercises follow the US approval of an 11.1 billion dollar weapons package for Taiwan, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing. China views Taiwan as part of its territory. It has vowed to retake the island even by force.
