Iran: UN sanctions end

Iran’s foreign minister says all United Nations Security Council restrictions against the country will be terminated on October 18 after the expiration of resolution 2231 that endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. In a post on X, Abbas Araghchi said this is a reality acknowledged by more than 120 members of the Non-Aligned Movement during the group’s recent summit in Uganda. Araghchi stressed that Iran will remain bound by the Non-Proliferation Treaty as a signatory, both in terms of national rights and obligations under the treaty. The foreign minister said this includes no limits whatsoever on the scale of Iran’s nuclear program. Araghchi also asserted that Iran’s sovereign rights are neither negotiable nor subject to political pressure. The stance by the Non-Aligned Movement is a slap in the face of the US and Europeans after they claimed to have snapped back the UN sanctions against Iran on September 27.

'No Tomahawk missiles for Kiev'

U-S president Donald Trump has cautioned that giving Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles could cause a significant escalation in the war with Russia. Trump made the remarks in a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House. He emphasized that the United States is reluctant to supply the powerful Tomahawk cruise missiles as it considers them a critical asset for its own defense needs. The Ukrainian president suggested that Kiev could provide drones to the US in exchange for the missiles. Russia has repeatedly warned the US that the provision of a Tomahawk would represent a substantial escalation in the conflict. The Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of nearly 2,000 kilometers, are capable of striking targets at considerable distances.
