Iran’s high school physics team claimed five silver medals at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2025) in Paris, France.
The Iranian team—comprising Mohammad‑Hassan Sadeghinejad, Aria Zarabi, Ilya Ghashaei, Mohammad‑Hassan Golabdar, and Milad Mohammadi—each earned a silver medal, helping Iran secure 11th place among 94 participating countries. The event was held between July 15 and 25.
After the medal ceremony, the Iranian team posed for a group photo holding the national flag alongside images of Iranian children killed in the recent 12-day Israeli aggression on Iran. Israel initiated the war on June 13 and was forced to accept a unilateral ceasefire 12 days later following strong retaliatory operations by Iranian forces.
Founded in 1967 in Warsaw (Poland), the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is among the most prestigious annual global competitions for secondary school science students. Typically held each summer in a different host country, the 2025 edition attracted around 400 contestants from 94 nations.
Iran’s strong showing in 2025 builds on several years of solid performance.
Last year’s 54th IPhO took place in Isfahan, Iran, from July 21 to 28, 2024. That edition recorded participation from roughly 400 students representing 70–80 countries.
Iran’s home team achieved a notable result, earning one gold and four silver medals and finishing fourth overall—an improvement from its 11th-place finish in 2023.
Iranian students captured five medals (four silver, one bronze) at the 53rd IPhO in Tokyo 2023, held in July.
