US-Israeli genocide in Gaza
Death and destruction continue to ravage Gaza as the Israeli military intensifies its attacks against the blockaded territory. In one of the latest strikes, at least five people, including four women, were killed following an Israeli strike targeting the town of al-Fakhari, near the southern city of Khan Yunis. Israeli strikes also targeted the al-Mawasi refugee camp, near Rafah, killing several Palestinians and injuring dozens of others. To the north, Israeli shelling killed a number of Palestinians in the Bir al-Na’ja area. The Israeli siege on the war-ravaged territory is also taking its toll on the Gaza population with another child dying as a result of malnutrition and dehydration. According to Gaza officials, the death toll from the US-Israeli genocide since October 2023 has surpassed 53,900, with nearly 122,600 others injured. Most of the victims are women and children.
Israel war crimes
Israeli troops are systematically forcing Palestinians to act as human shields in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. That’s according to Israeli troops and several Palestinians. The Associated Press spoke with seven Palestinians who said they were used as shields in Gaza and the West Bank. It also spoke with two members of Israel’s military who said they engaged in the practice, which is prohibited by international law. Israeli soldiers said derogatory terms like mosquito were used to refer to the Palestinians used as shields. They said the practice is widespread and claimed that it sped up operations, saved ammunition, and spared combat dogs from injury or death. Rights groups say Israel has used Palestinians as shields in Gaza and the West Bank for decades.
Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange
Russia and Ukraine have each exchanged 307 more prisoners as part of the largest swap since the onset of the conflict between the two countries in 2022. The exchange comes a day after a total of 390 prisoners were released by each side. Further exchanges are anticipated over the weekend, aiming to fulfill a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap agreement that was negotiated in Istanbul. Previously, the Ukrainian president urged more sanctions against Russia following a major drone and missile assault on Kiev. Russia had earlier accused Ukraine of launching a massive drone attack against non-military targets in Moscow and vowed to retaliate. In recent weeks, diplomatic initiatives to resolve the conflict have intensified.
