French police have attacked a group of university students staging a mass rally over budget cuts at universities.
Riot police wearing helmets and protective gear with shields violently barged on the protesting students marching through the streets of the French capital city on Thursday.
Police blocked the protesters' path and used tear gas to disperse the students who had gathered to protest against budget cuts to French education programs.
Footage of the peaceful rally organized by Stand Up For Science France showed the demo turning violent as tensions escalated, leading to the police clamping down on the student protesters with riot police using their batons to bash them.
Reports said the students were initially chanting slogans and carrying a cardboard Tesla draped with a US flag and with plates reading “FUK-MSK” targeting Tesla owner Elon Musk as they marched through the streets of Paris.
The students then lit the cardboard Tesla effigy as well as the American flag that covered it on fire, while lighting smoke bombs and throwing flares at the police officers stationed near Place de la Bastille.
“That’s when the riot police charged vigorously and even bludgeoned a few students,” said Cedric Canton, an eyewitness to the incident.
