Papua New Guinea’s decision to open embassy in al-Quds violates intl. law: Palestine
Palestine has condemned the decision by Papua New Guinea to open an embassy in Israeli-occupied al-Quds, terming it as a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations resolutions concerning the holy city, its legal and political status, and the legitimate rights of Palestinians.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on Wednesday that the measure constitutes an act of aggression against Palestinian people and their rights, warning the Pacific nation against standing on the wrong side of history.
It went on to stress that this decision causes great harm to chances of achieving peace on the basis of the so-called two-state solution.
The ministry said the decision is an unacceptable move in line with normalization with the occupying regime and its crimes, and marks a blatant defiance of relevant United Nations resolutions at a time when the Israeli military is escalating its violations and aggression against Palestinian people, their homeland, properties and holy places.
The Palestinian foreign ministry underlined that it will take actions against the countries that have either opened embassies in al-Quds or transferred their diplomatic missions to the city through political, diplomatic and legal channels, calling on the government of Papua New Guinea to immediately reverse the decision.
According to Israel’s Channel 14, Israel has recently provided Papua New Guinea with aid in the areas of agriculture, medicine and humanitarian assistance.
Papua New Guinean authorities, in return, have stopped voting in recent years on resolutions against Israel at the United Nations.
Israel illegally annexed East al-Quds in 1980 in a move not recognized by the global community.
Currently, the United States, Kosovo, Guatemala and Honduras have embassies in al-Quds, while most countries maintain their diplomatic representation in the coastal city of Tel Aviv.
