Niger coup

Nearly two weeks have passed since Niger’s military coup that resulted in the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum. The junta now reportedly seeks dialogue with the West African regional bloc that has threatened military action if the ousted president is not restored to his post. Toppled Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou says Niger's military rulers have urged a delegation of the Economic Community of West African States to return for talks. An ECOWAS delegation arrived in the capital Niamey last Thursday. But it did not stay overnight as scheduled and did not meet either Bazoum or the coup leaders. The bloc will hold an extraordinary summit to discuss Niger in Abuja on Thursday. Meanwhile, Mali has warned that a military intervention by ECOWAS in Niger could be a catastrophe.
