Plots by hegemonic powers

Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the hegemonic powers will not end their hostility toward Iran, if it retreats. Ayatollah Khamenei says the enemy wants to take Iran back to its pre-revolution era. He says last year’s riots in the country were planned and instigated by Western countries’ think tanks and intelligence agencies. According to the leader, they provided financial, military and media support. Ayatollah Khamenei added that the enemies planned the riots because they thought Iran will be defeated but they, again, failed to realize the reality about the Iranian nation. He said the enemy also seeks to frustrate Iranians by magnifying problems. However, the leader said people should keep up their hope and stay vigilant against such plots. He made the comment on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the passing away of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

Syria-Iraq ties

The Syrian foreign minister is on a two-day visit to Baghdad, where he is meeting with senior Iraqi officials. Faisal Mekdad has already held meetings with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani and foreign minister Fuad Hussein. In a joint press conference, Iraq's Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said his country will continue cooperating with Damascus to combat terrorism and drug trafficking across their joint borders. He also stressed the need for humanitarian aid following the February 6 earthquake that killed tens of thousands in Syria and Turkey. Syrian Foreign Minister thanked Iraq for its solidarity after the quake. He also hailed the improvement of bilateral relations.

India train tragedy

Let’s turn to the train crash that killed at least 275 people in India. Authorities there have now completed rescue operations and are investigating the cause of the incident. Investigators are probing the computer-controlled electronic track management system, citing signal failure as the likely cause. On Friday, a high-speed passenger train moved out of the main track and crashed into a stationary freight-train parked on a loop track. It then went off track, toppled and collided with another oncoming passenger train. The crash happened near the district of Balasore in the eastern state of Odisha. It was India’s deadliest train crash in more than two decades. More than 1,20 people were also injured.
