Peru political crisis

Peru still witnessing violent protests, two months after democratically-elected leftist President Pedro Castillo was ousted and detained early in December.

Demonstrators have been demanding that Castillo's successor, Dina Boluarte, step down and that fresh elections be held. The Peruvian Congress has ruled to move up elections from 2026 to 2024 but has rejected further bids to hold the vote sooner.
